School Holidays...

Posted on April 10 2016

Just want to say thanks heaps to everyone that read my first blog! After I crawled out from under my doona, and put down the brown paper bag that I was gasping into, I read some of your encouraging comments and was rapt. So I'm back!

Back to school tomorrow! *happy dance/twerk/fist pump*. Our holidays have been pretty quiet. My husband worked pretty much the entire time, bless him, so it was just me and the kids. Every day I would look at Facebook and see people out doing holiday things, being really good mums, taking their children out to special places and having fun times.

Each day my kids would ask me what we were doing today. 'Can we go to funfields? Can we go to the movies?' Can we go roller skating?' I would reply with the old 'we'll see' but to be honest, by the time I went to Woolies and bought bloody food, the chance of a day at funfields was as likely as a day trip to Disneyland. It wasn't gunna happen!

These holidays have seen my children (and their various friends) consume:

- 27 litres of milk
- 15 loaves of bread
- 12 cups of noodles
- 2 jars of Nutella
- A jumbo bag of dinosaur nuggets
- 3 boxes of that disgusting Easy Mac stuff
- 27 bananas
- 3 litres of yoghurt
- 2 kilos of apples
- 2 kilos of grapes
- 6 punnets of strawberries.
-
They ate heaps of other crap too, but im not really sure what, although if I vacuumed on, under and in the couch, then inspected the contents of the vacuum bag, I'd probably find out.

I have washed at least 20 cups per day. My washing machine has been going non stop. They have changed outfits as often as a Victoria's Secret model. I've found play dough in the dishwasher and the house phone in the toilet. They dug a hole in the back yard and spent hours making mud pies. Right next to my line full of white washing. (Not so white anymore).

Ive picked up my couch cushions 743 times. Ive folded blankets from their discarded forts. I've played referee in many different forms. I've threatened soap on tongues, iPad restrictions, wifi disconnection, cancelled play dates. I've hidden in the shed while they called me, begging for my Apple ID and password, eating their Easter eggs and rocking.

I've also slept in. A lot. Had heaps of laughs and cuddles. Spent days in my pjs, watched Toy Story more times than I can count. I've watched my kids play with their friends. Watched them write songs and then listened to them perform them. Observed the people they are growing up to be. These holidays have been like my old childhood! Back to basics. I think they've had a good time. They don't feel deprived or that they are missing out. Well not right now anyway. Pretty sure I'll find a handwritten note in the coming days saying something along the lines of 'you are the worst mother and I'm bored'.

How do you feel about the holidays? Have you had enough or would you like just a little more time?

Claire x

Great blog Claire. We had a mini holiday, went to movies etc. Spent more money than I would have liked to! I worked half the holidays whilst hubby had time off, however he spend that time organising, running around and helping set up our local footy club for the official opening today! Phew!
Kinda happy for quiet days, fuller wallets and a tidy home!!
Keep up the great work ?

Unfortunately I have worked all school holidays, so I wish they could be a little longer so I could have some time with the kids. Fingers crossed next school holidays I’ll have some time with them.

I still have the 2 year old demon, so I’m not quite off the hook, but I will miss the girls. I think. A little. Maybe. ?

    Love this Claire.
I think I’m crazy but I want more time with them. I am looking forward to a tidy house tomorrow but the mess and noise is so much more fun. Clarissa
